Gramática—o presente progressivo/contínuo
Gramática—o presente progressivo/contínuo. Authored by: Craig stokes. License: CC BY: Attribution
When we want to emphasize that an action is taking place at this moment, we use the present progressive. In Brazilian Portuguese, it is a simple construction.
The present progressive in Brazilian Portuguese is formed by the verb «estar» and a gerund of the verb. To make a gerund, simply remove the -r from the infinitive and add -ndo. There are no irregular gerund forms.
Model gerunds
Here are model gerunds:
- morar → morando
- fazer → fazendo
- pedir → pedindo
- pôr → pondo
- ir → indo
Exemplos
- Eles estão assistindo televisão. (They are watching television.)
- Eu estou almoçando em casa. (I am eating lunch at home.)
- Você está pedindo café. (You are ordering a coffee.)
- A gente está indo embora. (We are leaving right now.)
- *Ele está se divertindo no jogo de futebol.
If there is a reflexive pronoun, it goes best between the verb «estar» and the «gerundio».
O presente progressivo em Portugal
In Portugal, the common way to form the progressive is to use the verb «estar» with the preposition «a», followed by an infinitive. Therefore, we get the following constructions.
- Eu estou a almoçar em casa. (I am eating lunch at home.)
- Você está a pedir um café. (You are ordering a coffee.)
We will not practice this alternative form in this text, but we should be aware of its existence.
