The useful irregular verb, dar, means “to give,” but there are many idiomatic uses for this verb. First, we must look at the conjugation.

Exemplos

Literal meaning—to give

Meu avó me um abraço. (My grandmother gives me a hug.) 

Eu dou um presente para você. (I give you a present.)


Idiomic meanings

Os filhos dão muito trabalho.  (Children are a lot of work.)

Isso não certo. (That doesn’t work.)
