Content for Unidades A and B and Suplementos

All units in this textbook are divided into Part A and Part B (except Unit 8). Part A of each unit introduces the new content and the primary language functions in context. Part B expands the material by revising some of the already presented vocabulary and tasks and introducing new vocabulary and language functions.

After each Part, there is a section called Suplementos. The Suplementos section contains expanded grammar explanations and practice exercises.

Below is an index of the content covered per unit for quick reference.

UNIDADE 1 – PARTE A

UNIDADE 5 – PARTE A
A Família

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

VOCABULARY

This unit covers vocabulary related to nuclear and extended family, physical descriptions, daily activities, house chores, and parts of the house along with common furniture items.

LANGUAGE STRUCTURES

Students will work with the present tense of the verb pedir (to ask), prepositions of place such as atrás and encima, and the present tense of the verb precisar (to need). From Português para Principiantes, learners will also study selected irregular verbs in the present tense and basic introductory vocabulary.

READINGS

UNIDADE 5 – PARTE B
AS Casas

By the end of this lesson, you will be able to:

This unit introduces vocabulary related to extended family, special dates such as Dia das Mães, national holidays in Brazil, different types of houses, parts of the house and common furniture items, and places found in a typical neighborhood.

LANGUAGE STRUCTURES

Students will practice the present tense of the verb pedir (to ask), prepositions of place such as atrás and encima, and the present tense of the verb precisar (to need). From Português para Principiantes, the unit also includes work with adjectives, numbers from 1 to 50, and telling time.

READINGS

The reading selection for this unit is “Edifício Copan.”

This unit introduces vocabulary related to different types of accommodations such as hotel and albergue, special dates like Dia das Mães, national holidays in Brazil, various types of houses, parts of the house and common furniture items, and places typically found in a neighborhood.

LANGUAGE STRUCTURES

Students will work with the present tense of the verbs viajar (to travel) and falar (to speak). They will also study the simple past of fazer (to do/make) and ir (to go), as well as the past forms of ficar (to become/stay), dançar (to dance), and sair (to go out). The unit includes the simple past of ser (to be), question pronouns such as onde, como, quando, and quanto, and from Português para Principiantes, the simple past and spelling changes of irregular verbs.
