Earlier in the textbook, we covered how to make nouns and adjectives plural. Since many food items in the Unidade could be tricky to pluralize, it is time to revisit some rules and add some new ones.

Singular forms Plural forms
o pão de queijo os pães de queijo
o pão francês os pães franceses
o limão os limões
o camarão os camarões
o macarrão os macarrões
o pastel de nata os pastéis de nata
o arroz integral os arrozes integrais
a comida saudável as comidas saudáveis
o guaraná os guaranás
o café os cafés

The chart has four sections.

  1. The first entries remind us that the plural of “pão” is “pães.” They also remind us that “francés” loses the accent in “franceses.”
  2. The second group reminds us that words that end in “-ão” usually will end in “-ões” in plural.
  3. Group three shows us that words ending in -l have different forms.
    • If it ends in stressed -el, as in “pastel,” the plural is “pastéis.” Don’t forget the accent mark.
    • If it ends in stressed -al, as in “integral,” the plural is “integrais.”
    • If it ends in unstressed -al, as in “saudável,” the plural is “saudáveis.” Don’t forget the accent mark.
  4. The last group shows us that adding an -s to words like “guaraná” and “café” is sufficient to form the plural.

Throughout the textbook, we have seen other words we didn’t use in the plural. These are words like “ônibus” and “lápis.” What do they have in common? They are singular forms that end in -s and the last syllable is unstressed.

Look at these examples:

A empresa tem um ônibus. (The company only has  one bus.)

A empresa tem muitos ônibus. (The company has many busses.)

Você tem um lápis? (Do you have a pencil?)

Quantos lápis você tem? (How many pencils do you have?)

As you can see, the singular and plural forms are identical.
