When we talk about eating in a restaurant, there are two crucial verbs that we need to think about: PEDIR (to ask for/order) and SERVIR (to serve). Both verbs are slightly irregular.
pedir (to ask for/order) | |
---|---|
eu peço | nós pedimos |
tu pedes | a gente pede |
ele/ela/você pede | eles/elas/vocês pedem |
We need to consider three factors when using PEDIR:
- As with the verb QUERER, there is an open -e- in all forms except “pedimos.”
- “Peço” is an irregular first-person form.
- PEDIR is used to ask for, order, or petition something. To ask a question we use the verb PERGUNTAR.
Here are some examples:
- No meu restaurante preferido eu peço uma sopa de frango. (At my favorite restaurant, I order chicken soup.)
- Pedimos uns refrigerantes no almoço. (We order soft drinks at lunch.)
- Para sobremesa ele pede sorvete mas a esposa dele pede um bolo de morango. (He orders ice cream for dessert, but his wife orders strawberry cake.)
servir (to serve) | |
---|---|
eu sirvo | nós servimos |
tu serves | a gente serve |
ele/ela/você serve | eles/elas/vocês servem |
The verb SERVIR has another type of stem change we have not seen before.
- The -e- changes to -i- in “sirvo.”
- The -e- in “serves, serve, servem” is open.
- The -e- in “servimos” is closed.
In this Unidade, we use SERVIR because we are speaking about restaurants. However, we can use it more generically or reflexively.
Examples
- A gente serve caipirinhas nas festas. (We serve caipirinhas at parties.)
- Eles se servem os pães de queijo. (They serve themselves Brazilian cheese balls.)
- Um garfo serve para comer salada. (A fork works to eat salad.)
Here is one last verb that is worth mentioning. The verb DIZER comes up in Unidade 2, Parte A, but we have not seen the full conjugation.
dizer (to say, tell) | |
---|---|
eu digo | nós dizemos |
tu dizes | a gente diz |
ele/ela/você diz | eles/elas/vocês dizem |
The verb is only slightly irregular and acts much like the verb FAZER.
- The first person has an irregular form: “digo.” (Spanish speakers recognize this form.)
- The third person singular ends in -z where we would expect -e.
A student might use this verb to ask how to say something in Portuguese.
—Professor, como se diz “sugar” em português? (Professor, how do you say “sugar” in Portuguese?)
—A gente diz “açúcar.” (We say “açúcar.”)
Another use for DIZER could be in command form to make someone speak or tell you something. Note that the singular and plural commands (você/vocês) come directly from “digo.”
Examples
- Diga-me qual é sua comida favorita. (Tell me what your favorite food is.)
- Digam “Nós gostaríamos de um suco de laranja.” (Say “We want an orange juice.)
